How can I connect a external power supply to a computer via usb, for monitoring temperature or fan speed?
It's some kind a project. I will use my pc to monitor status of a power supply via usb. Then I will convert it to embedded system. So, a power supply controls ownselfs electricity frequence,temprature,fan speed and etc. How can I do the first stage, first of all? I know C/C++, and Java but I have not programmed ports before. What do you suggest me?
This will be a big project in terms of both time and money. If you have to ask you probably aren't ready for it.
Where to start:
1. Buy a PIC that has a digital port capable of USB communications and as many analog ports as you wish to monitor.
2. Buy or build a programming board for the PIC (these vary from 50$ US to 200$ US depending on what you want in them)
3. Buy a usb connector and attatch it to the usb capable digital port you selected
4. Program a simple hello world that makes the PIC spit out a properly formated simple text string.
5. Write an interface that will allow you to view the text string that the PIC is spitting out.
6. Connect the PIC's analog inputs to the power supply's voltage rails (Don't overload, use a voltage divider or an opp amp if you need to)
7. See if you can get the PIC to spit out the values of each of the analog inputs sequentially preceded by a reference byte.
8. Make your program wait for the reference byte and then read the values of the analog inputs and then calculate and display the voltages.
Hint: buy several PIC's they are sensitive electronics, and when they arent working as intended it is always good to look over the circuit you have built trying to find possibilities for overloading the PIC, and then install a fresh one to see if your malfunction is a result of damage to one of your PICs. I usually place stickers on mine and mark them with a pen when I find that they are First Used(-) Questionable(?) and Broken(x) so that I dont mix them up.
