What turntable should I get?
I'm getting a turntable next week for my birthday and I am ready to buy the Stanton T.62. I know it's meant for DJ's but I've heard the cartridge it comes with (500 v.3) is good. I was wondering wether there is a good quality direct-drive turntable for around the same price which is £160. thank you for your help.
I want a turntable that's not USB and one that is solely for listening to not for DJs and must be direct-drive.
Well I will give you a few things to think about that might change your mind or just give you some knowledge about turntables. First to understand that all turntables (other then usb) require a phonostage to play records. A phonostage takes and amplifies the signal from the cartridge and then re-equalizes the audio signal coming from the record. All records are recorded compressed with the low frequency's cut and the high frequency's boosted. This is so the stylus can track the record with minimal stylus movement, otherwise it would not be able to track it, and the stylus would fly off the record.
There are a few different types of cartridges and requires the right type of phonostage to properly amplify the cartridges signal.
Moving coil cartridges depending on output levels, can use ether a moving coil or moving magnet phonostage. A moving magnet cartridge can only use a moving magnet phonostage.
Next in the lower price range belt drive turntables are going to provide you with much better performance over a direct drive. Unless you are planning to dj or scratch you are better off getting a belt drive turntable.
With out a doubt the best buy in budget turntables is the REGA (British turntable manufacture) turntables.
Cartridge should be chosen by the sound your after and the tonearm. All cartridges need to match the lateral mass of the tonearm. Its kinda like matching shocks to a car, heavier car stiffer shocks, lighter car less stiff shocks. Same thing with the lateral mass of the arm, all cartridges have different sounds, and different compliances.
