Designa controlled experiment to determine whether a male garter snake will track only a female of his specie?
This is what the question says :
"During mating season, male snakes exhibit tracking behavior when they follow chemical pheromone trails deposited on the ground by females. Design a controlled experiment to determine whether a male garter snake will track only a female of his species or will also follow the female of a related species"
The question is part of an AP bio extended response. I really appreciate any help 
OK.... let's see.... a pheromone is like a hormone but is liberated into the air (on on a structure) and usually causes a behavioral reaction in the animal that perceives the chemical.
So.... we have a chemical.... an odor.... that has x amount of time it is active. We have the receiver snake that does some behavior.
The first thing, of course, is to try to define the pheromone, and be able to get the chemical from different species of snakes. It has to be active, so that it can be demonstrated that it will attract males of its own species to the chemical.
Knowing the above, we want to give the male garter snake an opportunity to choose between, say, two choices. A female (or female pheromone) from his own species vs. that of another species..... Perhaps a Y maze is appropriate here with the ends of the y having the two chemicals (or one chemical and the other arm no chemical as a control).
Another way might be to tap into the olfactory nerve of the snake and pass air over the tongue/nasal area with the chemical to see if one can elicit a neurological reaction......
Think this through.... decide on what you want to do, and HOW you are going to test the hypothesis.
