I need help with a mashup/DJ Earworm paper thesis?
I'm developing a 25pg paper and am racking my brains for a focus --something to latch onto. I'm looking at the music genre of mashups and their rise in popularity with DJ Earworm's the United State of Pop series as the epitome of the movement. I feel that arguing "significance" isn't enough. Perhaps it's use as a snapshot of my generation? I could look at it's role in defining this new generation...any ideas from others would really help getting me focused --at the moment I feel like I don't know where exactly to put my research efforts besides basic info on the artist and genre.
I'd think about which songs get included in the mashups. Most will be popular mainstream songs, but then an occasional "oldie" or more obscure tune will make its way in. For example, in Miracles by Norwegian Recycling (another mashup artist you could discuss), you have Taylor Swift, B.O.B., and Lady Gaga, but a key part of the arrangement comes from an old Michael Jackson song. Looking at the songs sampled in Like OMG Baby I only recognize about half of the artists. You could make an argument that this is proof that music from all different ages and genres has distinct similarities that come out in these mashups. You could spin that in an inspiring way, or you could go the more depressing route and talk about how all these songs are the same. When listening to the radio, I can't tell if I'm about to hear Take It Off or Hold it Against Me for a few seconds because they have the exact same opening. Other songs do this too. It's not sampling or ripping anything off. It's just a lack of originality, which then works out by the songs going so easily together.
